[Cs-club-l] Meeting Notes 10/8

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you all had a great weekend.

Guest Speaker:
Today we had a guest speaker, Kevin Zack, come to the club to talk about getting a school team together for a program called Arliss. The idea is to build a come-back rover that will be launched out of a rocket at 12,000 feet and needs to get back to a GPS location. He is hoping it would be a collaboration between the CS, ES and Physics clubs. The CS Club would be in charge of getting it to come back to a certain GPS location.
Since the club seems to have enough interest, he is going to see if he can get money to put this together.
This is aimed at Sophomores and Juniors since next semester will be the planning stage and then the semester after that will be the building.
If you want more information you can email Kevin:

T-shirts:
Since we don't know if we can put a Seawolf on the shirts due to copyright infringement, we talked about having the shirts just say "Computer Science Club" on the front with "Space Rays will Flip Your Bits" on the back.
Unless someone wants design something to put on the shirt, that's all it will have.
The colors will be blue/navy and white.

AwesomeTimes:
There are limited Mac addresses, so if you paid and don't have the password find Kristi, Matt, Tim or Will and they will give it to you.

CS Club Events:
Saturday, October 20 - @6pm - 10pm there is going to be a LAN Party as well as a SSB Tournament (Super Smash Bros). There will be both Melee and Brawl.
There is a cost of $5 but it includes pizza and soda.
There will be Steam access, LOL, Starcraft 2, TF2, Age of Empires and many more games. Feel free to bring  any consoles and games.

Monday, October 22 - @ 2pm there is going to be a meeting in Darwin 25

WICS Events:
Saturday, November 3 - !(Hack_A_Thon) (Pronounced Not Hack-a-thon) Estimated time is 12pm-8pm but is subject to change.
This will be an all day event where anyone can come with a programming project they would like to work on and try to have something from it by the end of the day. Even if you don't have an idea, come anyway and see
if you can help someone else with their idea. It will be a great opportunity to work with others, learn something new, and work on something you've always wanted to do.

Hopefully I will see you all at the LAN Party!

[Cs-club-l] Meeting Reminder and Rockets

Hey everyone!

Just reminding you we have a meeting on Monday, 10/8 at 2pm in Darwin 25.

But this won't be just any meeting.

Kevin Zack from Arliss will be talking about getting the CS, ES and Physics clubs together to build a come-back rover that will be launched out of a rocket at 12,00 feet that needs to get back to a GPS location. If that sounds like something you're interested in please come to the meeting so Kevin knows there is interest. It sounds like a really awesome opportunity for the clubs and it would be great if as many as you can come as possible.

Hope to see you there!

[Cs-club-l] Short-term job opportunity - Apple Consultant

Hi again everyone,

Dr. James Fouche sent out this request today. If you have experience with both Mountain Lion and iOS6 integration and want to help out send him an email.

Thanks,
Matt

Subject: Apple Consultant

Hi -- I am a professor in the school of education seeking a student to
assist me in setting up a new MacBook Air laptop.  I am a longtime mac
user but I am retiring soon and cannot get assistance from SSU IT
dept.  This person should be very familiar with Apple products and
systems -- e.g. newer OS X versions and iPhone and iCloud etc. Someone
who can set things up and help me deal with iTunes and Apps would be
ideal. Technical knowledge and communication skills are important.  I
will pay this person a mutually agreed to fee for services. Any
suggestions you have are appreciated.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Analysis
(CIGA) in the Geography Dept. has a new NASA research grant to update the functionality of its "geoweb" tool used for collecting land-cover reference data from Google Earth.  The tool is called the Virtual Interpretation of Earth Web-Interface Tool (VIEW-IT), described in this publication, http://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/3/3/601
Some parts of VIEW-IT were developed by past SSU CS undergraduates David Turover and Joseph Muller a couple of years ago.

We are in need of one to two motivated and talented CS students that want paid work experience ($12/hr) to continue development of VIEW-IT.  A main goal is to make the system more robust and accessible for global crowd-sourcing of reference data needed in mapping land-cover from satellite and other remotely-sensed imagery.   Fig 1 in the publication explains the full suite of skills that are needed (JavaScript, PhP, SQL, CGI, maybe some python scripting).   Funding starts on October 1 and work could continue into next semester and the summer of 2013.

More background on the scope of the NASA grant funding this research can be found here:

Please contact Dr. Matthew Clark (aka "Mateo") by email if interested (matthew.clark@sonoma.edu).

[Cs-club-l] Seawolf Day Volunteers & Reminders

Hi Everyone,

Volunteers Needed Tomorrow: Seawolf Decision Day
This is a critical time for those that have received admissions letters in their decision to find if Sonoma State is the right place for them in the fall.
We need volunteers to help man labs, help with presentations that Dr.'s Rivoire and Watts are putting on, run our table, etc. The event is from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Come when you can and help out. You do not need to come for the entire event. Any time to help show off our major helps. We will also be showing off the iPad/Arduino/IR Sensor Grid Darwin Mapping project preliminary prototype which is a joint effort between Computer Science and Engineering in the afternoon.

Computer History Museum 4/20 @ 9AM, Meet at the flag pole:
Over break a few of us decided to check out the museum and were absolutely amazed with some of the great artifacts from the past of computing. Pieces of ENIAC, a Xerox PARC Alto, Google's first server, an Apple I signed by Woz are just a few of the great items on display. Also, they display daily a working Babbage Difference Engine which is a mechanical polynomial calculator. It is amazing to see. The cost is $12 for admission with a student ID. Also, please be considerate to the drivers and bring some gas money. Google is basically next door, so we may also hop over to take a photo in front of the Android statues!

Elections & Next Meeting 4/17 @ Noon in Darwin 25

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

Good afternoon and/or evening, fellow computer geeks,

Just popping in to remind you that the CS Club is hosting a Board Game Night™ tomorrow (Friday, March 2nd, 2012) at 4 PM in the lobby of Darwin Hall. Be sure to come on down (or up, as in my case) for a night of dice-rolling, piece-moving, and card-dropping.

As usual, we do have a couple games on hand, but you're welcome to bring in any games you think might be fun.

We also have a couple friends on hand, but you're welcome to bring some of those too. (And snacks, if that's your thing).

Hope to see you there.

[Cs-club-l] CS Club Minutes - 2/28

Hi Everyone,

Here are the minutes from the meeting today

Letters for Dr. Rivoire

Dr. Rivoire has been nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award. If you have been a student of hers please send an email to
holmstrl@sonoma.edu and tell them how great of a teacher she is. This will help her win the award which we all know she deserves. This is very important to Dr. Rivoire, Dr. Kooshesh and her students. Emails need to be sent by March 2nd! You have three days! Go do it now! Stop reading this email and write it!

Board Game Night:

Come out this Friday, at 4:00 PM for an awesome board game night! Take your mind off of coding for a few hours and have fun with friends. Bring games to play, snacks to eat, and friends to play with. The games can be anything that is not a video game, so I expect some of the folks in 470 to bring a physical version of Pentago, well maybe not.

Trip to Vertigo:
Right after the meeting ended, Carissa heard from Vertigo. We have a trip planned March 9th in the afternoon. We are likely going to meet at around 2:00pm and carpool down together. If you are going to meet us our appointment is from 3:30pm until 5:00pm. Vertigo loves to hire Sonoma State CS majors, so come out! This is a great opportunity. We will have more information in the meeting next week.

Open Lab Every Friday
:
Every Friday from 12-4p we are going to have an open lab session in Darwin 25. Please come out and help others, or get help yourself. This is a great opportunity to build the community and get to know each other.

Lab Reminder:
If you are the last one to leave one of the labs please close the doors and turn off the lights please. Please help protect these valuable assets to our major.

Geek Week (3/11-3/16)
Come join your fellow geeks during the week of Pi Day!
Participate in games everyday to earn our department points. The department with the most points at the end of the week wins the Darwin Cup! It will be a lot of fun and a great way to meet and get to know your fellow CS majors.

The first event will be dodge ball at 2pm in the Rec Center. If you don't like dodge ball just show up so we can get participation points.

The rest of the events will be Monday-Friday at 12pm somewhere around Darwin or Stevenson.

We are co-hosting Rock, Paper, Scissors with Geology on Monday at 12pm.

If you want a t-shirt bring $10 to the next meeting, however, the people on the list will be the first to get a shirt.

Trivia Night (Either April 20th or 21st)
Come battle against faculty and alumni to test your knowledge of computer science! This should be a fun night with pizza and getting our butts kicked by our professors. Dr. Ledin comes up with the questions so pay attention to him in class. I know I will in both Software Engineering, and in Malware!

Next Meeting (3/6)
Because of Geek Week, the original date for our next meeting has been canceled for us. The next meeting with be next week, March 6th at 12pm in Darwin 25.

Have a great week! Happy coding!

Matt

[Cs-club-l] Meeting Notes - 1/31/12

Good day, CS Club.

Here are the notes from today's CS Club meeting:

CS Club's New Direction - More CS
CS Club in the past has had a major focus on gaming and leisure activities. Though we're still intending to have these event and activities, we're going to be placing more emphasis on academic pursuits and providing an environment in the department/club similar to how it used to be a couple years back. In order to accomplish this, we're making two major changes:

  1. Open lab times - We're hoping to let the labs be a haven for students to work and collaborate and group up
  2. Less LANs - Computer problems aside, we're going to reevaluate the LAN situation before we actually throw one.
Job Openings
There are a number of positions available to CS Majors, including teaching someone UNIX, Web Design, and MySQL, and a number of other positions. If you wish to inquire, please e-mail csclubevents@gmail.com

Trips
We're looking for interest in trips to a number of tech companies, such as Vertigo, Drivesavers, and even a trip to the Computer History Museum. Express interest to csclubevents@gmail.com or come to the next meeting and speak up.

Interview/Resume Talks
Keep your eyes and ears pealed for future events geared towards building skills to help you get a job after school.

Re-elections
All of our positions will be open at the end of this semester. We're going to need a new President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Fun Police//Event Coordinator. Keep that in mind.

The next meeting will take place on Feb. 14. Hope to see you all then (You can be our valentine <3).

Any further questions/suggestions/concerns can be directed to csclubevents@gmail.com

'Till next time,
Charles Semple
CS Club Event Coordinator

[Cs-club-l] Colloquium Talk and SAC Meeting

Hello everyone,

This is just a reminder that tomorrow, January 26, the clubs will be giving a short presentation about what is in store for this semester.  This talk will be fairly short and will take place at noon in Salazar 2016.

There is also a Student Advisory Council meeting on Monday, January 30 at noon in Darwin 101. These meetings are specifically for the School of Science and Technology and are nice to go to. During this SAC meeting we will be going over the details of Geek Week as well as other things that are happening around campus. Emily Hurd, our senator for the School of Science and Technology, is trying to entice more students to attend this meeting by providing pizza if enough students say they will attend.

Thanks and I will see you tomorrow at colloquium,

Carissa Wacker
